THE RYDER CUP LANDS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITALY!

Since its birth in 1927,  the famous tournament held twice a year will arrive for the first time in Italy in 2022, more precisely in Rome, in the beautiful Marco Simone Golf Club.

The fact that the Ryder Cup is going to be played on Italian Territory is proof of the growing importance that golf in Italy is acquiring in the International Golfing World. A further demonstration of how important the event is for Italian Golf, is the overcoming of prestigious countries such as Spain, Germany and Austria, which can boast an excellent tradition of Golf.

The Ryder Cup, which usually takes place in autumn in September and October, is named after the English Samuel Ryder and originally involved the U.S. team opposed to the English until 1971. From 1973 Ireland was also included following the annexation to Great Britain, until it was extended to the whole of continental Europe in 1979, giving a more balanced show, interrupting the American dominance, then holder of 15 trophies out of 19.

The competition, will see, as usual, a selection of U.S. players against a selection of European players. Let’s see together the main Italian protagonists in the history of the Ryder Cup!

NOTORIOUS ITALIAN PLAYERS – RYDER CUP

Edoardo Molinari, Francesco Molinari, Costantino Rocca

Edoardo Molinari, Francesco Molinari, Costantino Rocca

Costantino Rocca (Bergamo, 04/12/1956)

He was the first Italian player to compete for Team Europa in the 1993 Ryder Cup, then in 1995 and 1997. Notable is his “Hole in One” in 1995 and the victory in the direct clash against Tiger Woods in the Spanish edition of 1997.

Edoardo Molinari (Turin, 11/02/1981)

Edoardo is Francesco’s older brother, and together they were the first brothers to compete for the European team in the same 2010 Ryder Cup. In this edition, which saw the triumphant European team, saw as protagonist Edoardo, who participated in the victory by winning the Celtic Manor in Wales. After a brilliant amateur career in which he won several national championships, Edoardo won many professional trophies, including the World Cup won at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup in China, again with his brother Francesco.

Francesco Molinari (Turin, 08/11/1982)

An established protagonist of the Italian golf scene, Francesco is to be counted among the champions of contemporary golf. He enters history as the first Italian to win a major tournament, the 147th British Open. In 2018 he won the Palm of best European player (first time for an Italian) after winning the Race to Dubai. The series of victories won by Francesco are many and of great importance (Reale Seguros Open de Espana, BMW PGA Championship, Open d’Italia, etc.). Needless to say, we are happy to have him in the Europa team in the Ryder Cup to come!

RYDER CUP 2018 – USA vs Europe

The 42nd edition of the Ryder Cup was held in France last year, from 28 to 30 September 2018 on the Albatros Course of Le Golf National in Guyancourt. The winning team was the European team, which won the last 5 matches of the competition.
