Federgolf Italia presents “Il golf è donna”

“Golf in Woman” – A brand new project introduced by the Italian Golf Federation.

The project, premiered the 31st of May 2019 at the Olgiata G.C. in Rome, is designed to increase the number of players and golf aficionados among women, how? By selecting 15 golf courses sprinkled throughout Italy and turning them into Pink Points, where events, promotional events dedicated to the world of women’s golf will be concentrated.

The activities will be many and varied: from 9-hole competitions, to athletic preparation, meetings on body care combined with golf and entertainment for children.

Participation is encouraged by a package of lessons, both for those who approach golf for the first time, and for those who want to start again after a period of maximum 3 years of absence from the last registration to a golf club).

The Open Day(s), that are going to be hosted by each course adhering the project, will be held between the 31st of May and the 23rd on June. Those who want to participate, with family or friends, can benefit from free trials and coaching of professionals.

Italy and Women’s Golf. Some numbers and clear objectives.

The percentage of women who play golf is about 26%, which is consistent with the European average and higher than the U.S. average, at 24% (source: KPMG).

The initiative was promoted in Rome not by chance: between 10 and 13 October 2019 in Olgiata will be held the 76th edition of the Open of Italy, the perfect opportunity to introduce the new project and draw the first conclusions.

In addition, the Ryder Cup of 2022, an event of world prestige, will be held in one of the most prestigious golf courses in the capital, the Marco Simone, confirming Rome as the most suitable location to launch such an event.

Another long-term goal would be the 2024 Summer Olympics which will be held in Paris. Alessandra Sensini, Vice President of the Italian National Olympic Committee, “the goal is to reach the 50% of female participants”.

Young Italian Talents

According to Maria Amelia Lolli Ghetti, F.I.G. Vice President and one of the promoters of the project, and Diana Luna, first Italian golfer to play the Solheim Cup in 2009, Italy can boast an excellent youth sector.

One of the young promises of the Italian women’s national team is Francesca Fiorellini, a member of the Olgiata, and recently victorious of the Girls Under 16 Open Championship. Another Italian champion is Alessandra Fanali, a member of Marco Simone and part of the authoritative team of Arizona University, committed to the famous Augusta National Women’s tournament.

ILGA – The largest association of women golfers

In Italy there is also the Italian Ladies Golf Association, one of the oldest women’s sports associations in Italy, founded in 1994, with the aim of promoting the discipline of golf in the world of women.

Their history can be traced back to the 80s, when golf was considered an elitist sport and mainly for men. Stimulated by the rapid change of epoch and by the progressive mental and cultural openness of society, ILGA saw the light of day thanks to the initiative of the first president of the association, Lio Selva, who obtained recognition and affiliation from the CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) and the FIG (Italian Golf Federation).

Currently there are 430 ILGA members, and they are in full growth thanks to the increasing spread of golf among women. You can keep up to date on their activities, conventions, competitions and methods of affiliation directly on their website: https://www.italianlga.it/blog/
