Why we insist on Sicily as a golf destination

We have been sponsoring Sicily as a golf destination for many years, even when Il Picciolo was the only course on the island.

The reasons of our belief lies in the fact that Sicily has a phenomenal potentiality to the point to overshadow the two Mediterranean golf destinations par excellence: Algarve and Costa do Sol.

Unfortunately, Sicily has not so many golf courses as these two other regions, but it is becoming more and more a preferred golf destination for many golfers, not only coming from Europe, but also from the North America.

As for the climate, Sicily has nothing to fear in comparison with the “twos”: consider that Donnafugata Golf Resort is located at the same longitude of Gibraltar, or Tunisi: you can imagine how the weather could be during throughout the year!

But where the other two regions can not keep up with Sicily is when we talk about History, Culture, Tradition, Food, Wine, Nature: here, Sicily crushes on the accelerator and greets the other two from a distance!

Sicily was a crossroad for so many cultures, it is hard to find another place that has been impacted by Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Romans, British, and French. All of these groups have left vestiges of their time in Sicily such as Norman palaces, Roman ruins, and Greek temples.

Scattered across the beautiful island you will be able to find the pieces of a vast history of visitors and conquerors. All of these influences come together to form the unparalleled culture, society, and people that remain truly unique, even to their own country.

Unfortunately, all these key factors are not enough by themselves to boost this region from a golfing point of view and the results are in front of each of us: the golf resorts are closed during the winter time (despite a wonderful climate), the considerable decrease of the flights to Sicily (not only during the winter), the Comiso airport served by a total of 13 European flights a week, Golf Club Siracusa has just closed, Le Madonie Golf Resort closed some years ago after only few months of operations, Corinthia Golf & Spa Resort Taormina never opened.

What to say! We only hope the four golf resorts still operating resist as long as possible! We can only have our finger crossed!
